Music From Memphis, TN

WC Handy (Father of the Blues) statue on Beale Street
He wrote the Memphis Blues.
I chose this week's Musical Monday Moves Me theme. Everyone needs to tell us where they are from and to feature music from their home town. Since I've lived in Memphis for the last 29 years, I now call this Tennessee town home. First up is a song from a young artist who was an APEX (intellectually gifted) student in Shelby County Schools where I teach. I know a couple of ladies who taught him, and I once saw him perform at one of our teacher's conferences. Unfortunately, I wasn't smart enough to ask Dr. Weiner when Justin Timberlake was coming in so I could schedule my dental appointments to be "In Sync" with his visits. I never saw another one of his patients, Gennifer Goodwin, in my dentist's office, either.

The next artist is The King. Although he died before I moved to Memphis, my father-in-law taught him how to tie a tie. My husband used to see him regularly at the Memphis Jewish Community Center after hours. He'd come out with his buddies to play basketball. Uncle Bernard Lansky, the clothier to the king, was so tight with Elvis that my husband was invited to ride in one of the limos at his funeral; however, Mitchell couldn't get home from college. Elvis Presley recorded his first record at Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee. Yo! Here comes Elvis.

There are many more artists with a Memphis connection. Ike and Tina Turner once owned a home not too far from where we live, Aretha Franklin brought lots of "Respect" to Memphis, Tennessee, and Rosanne Cash was born here while her father Johnny was recording at Sun Studios. Though not born in Memphis, B.B. King moved here and Isaac Hayes died here. We have become the mecca for music over the years as many artists lived here. But I know no one has ever heard of any of these people I mentioned or the many more one would find if you googled "Memphis Musicians." Not being one to post a lot of songs, I will end with one final song about our town. Marc Cohn wrote it after being touched by a visit to Memphis. He captured this place so well, that here he is.

They even made a Memphis the Musical.
So, do you this I was being selfish when I suggested this theme
or did I just want a chance to brag?

#MM Celebrate Me

This week's theme for Monday Music Moves Me is to post a song of celebration and then one that describes ourselves. First up, let's celebrate. Stevie Wonder's Do I Do has always made me feel like celebrating.

And next up please enjoy a song that describes me. Those who have followed my blog for any length of time know I'm totally nuts.

#MM: It's a Fanta Sea

The mysterious masterpiece Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen has always been one of my favorites. In researching the meaning of its lyrics, analysts suspect the song relates to composer Freddie Mercury's personal life. He grew up in a highly religious Zoroastrian family which did not accept what he became––gay. Especially in the 1970s, to be homosexual in his family was to make his mother cry. The man he killed was himself by not being what he was raised to be. Some think the pain relates to AIDS, which eventually led to his death; however, the disease was too unknown at the time. When people asked Freddie Mercury what his lyrics meant, he said, "I don't know."

I feel sorry for people with life styles that their family will not accept. A friend of mine has a transgender child. She has been beautifully accepting of him as has everyone else in his life. Maybe we are finally arriving.

#MM Southern Rock On

In the early eighties, I saw The Charlie Daniel's Band in concert.
Now in 2014, he's still performing for a new generation as my son goes to see him.

Here's another one that I used to love to listen to. I had the album and thoroughly enjoyed it.

#MM : I'm Playing Our Song ♫

On May 25, 1986, Americans attempted to make a human chain called Hands Across America. The idea was to raise money for charity by having people join hands from coast to coast. Unfortunately, the chain broke in the sparse western United States. On the same day strangers linked hands, my husband and I joined our hands in Holy Matrimony. Yep! Twenty-eight years later, and we're still hitched.

Since it's our wedding anniversary, it makes sense to play our song. It's words and meaning aren't the best pick, but it's the huge hit we danced to during our dating days, and we've always claimed it to be our song. Here's George Michael singing ♯♫ Careless Whisper. ♩♬

Female Artists of the Sixties Through Eighties

This week's theme is female artists of the sixties through the eighties, which was hard to narrow down with so many great songs and artists. I like to keep my posts short.

Speaking of females artist of that era, did I ever tell you about the time I didn't see Diana Ross? I was in the Bermuda airport when I noticed everyone looking my way but didn't know why. Later, I learned that she was directly behind me. Dang! If only I would have stopped and turned around.

Let's start with Jefferson Starship's Gracie Slick. I saw her perform when in college.

And, here's one of my faves by Sylvia. I sometimes catch myself singing this tune, even though my husband hasn't given me a reason to.

#MM : Young From When We Were Young (Plus a Bonus Hot Dog Tune)

I hadn't heard tell of the talented Neil Young in years, but now I just learned he is still touring and has a new album coming out. Who would have guessed? I'm sure his new music is great, but I'm a fan of the old songs. Twenty-four no more. Take a look at his life.

Born November 12, 1945, this next song
fits him better these days. (:o)  My bad.

And finally, here's the song that's been stuck
in my head these past few days. Wonder why?
Could it be that I took a ride in a Wiener Mobile?
More about that later.

Monday Music Moves Me, Puts Me in the Mood, and Feels So Good

Monday Music Moves Me theme is something jazzy. Post anything with brass and you're dancing!

Back in my college days, I was part of the Jazz, Blues, and Folk Committee where we'd bring big names to campus and see them back stage. I remember BB King walking in with his big bucket of KFC and a nasty manager who wouldn't let us near him; Pat Metheny giving us a private piano concert while we cleared his stage; and Leon Redbone's deep voice. But my favorite of all was Chuck Mangione. Here's one that Feels So Good.

Here's another fun one with lots of brass.

#MM: Ryan Dolan - Start Again

His Classmates Thought Making Fun Of Him Made Perfect Sense, But Then A Senseless Thing Happened

I absolutely love this song by Ryan Dolan; the strings are gorgeous, aren't they? The message in the song is made more poignant when you know that Ryan came out recently. Its message is one that needs to be repeated until we all start listening.
